Jeremiah exalted of the LORD
While Ezekiel was in exile in Babylon, Jeremiah was in Jerusalem warning the Jews to repent of idolatry and return to the Lord. They ignored him, beat him, imprisoned him, and even tried to kill him rather than turn away from their idols. In spite of their harsh treatment, Jeremiah continued his warnings and wept over their imminent destruction.
This is an intensely personal book in which the prophet writes about his own fears and doubts. Jeremiah did not record his prophecies in chronological order. Chapters 2 to 45 are prophecies against Judah, while chapters 46 to 51 are prophecies against other nations. If Judah cannot escape the punishment for idolatry, then neither can the other nations of the world. The final chapter describes the fall of Jerusalem and ends with the exiled king of Judah being treated kindly by his captors. This confirmed the truth of Jeremiah’s prophecies.
